the second picture represents elements of the Gothic due to its typical ambiguous setting, there is a castle in the distance and there is a misty fog in the atmosphere. The setting is important as it is the background for the story and gives a reader an initial thought on the text, the picture represents elements of the Gothic also because of the sense of mystery it creates there are figures which are not easily recognizable and the darkness within this picture also represents a sense of the unknown which could be lurking within this typical Gothic setting.

One element would be the setting, the second image seems to be a ancestral family home in the heath. Suggesting a breakaway from the wider society. The image of the woman and the man in the background suggest there is a love affair present which is another Gothic element. The image of the man laying against the tree suggests there has been an explainable event, which is another element of the Gothic. The supernatural may have affected the weather to create some sort of disruption in the area. Overall, in all the images it seems to be in a neglected area and the weather suggests its quite cold, possible mid winter, When the wind and snow storms are at its worst.

The last picture represents the Gothic element of isolation, the man appears to be marginalised from society, as he may have no sense of belonging. He may also feel like society has led him down due to their judgemental and narrow minds. For example, in Wuthering Heights Heathcliff is treated poorly, and in the first few chapters referred to as a "dark-skin gipsy". The first picture represents the Gothic element of the sublime, similar to Romanticism, the idea of sublime is significant to Wuthering Heights due to the very melodramatic nature of the characters.

The second picture represents an archetypal gothic setting as the house is built in isolation, this gives mystery to the setting but also a sense of hostility. It can be said the the setting often mirrors its owner, Heathcliff is a very ambiguous character as his rise to power goes unexplained. Wuthering Heights is described as a "misanthropist's heaven" which clearly refers to Heathcliff as he feuds with many characters out of vengence clearly affirming his dislike of mankind furthermore Heathcliff is often cold and ruthless to those close to him for example Isabella who is imprisoned by him in the house.

The first image represents the supernatural, where he looks out the window to Cathy's ghost, which at the start of the story creates tension and suspense, which causes the reader to question the narrative. Moreover, this also forebodes the rest of the story, because the reader eventually learns that Cathy will die, but the question is how and why does Heathcliff, who is shown to be so strong-willed, break down at learning that Cathy was there. This questions the agenda, because if women were seen as the inferior gender, Bronte suggest that women were, indirectly, the superior gender because the ghost induces emotion from Heathcliff and fright from Mr Lockwood. The last image represents the Gothic element of isolation, as Heathcliff appears to be by himself. This symbolizes his exclusion from the home he was raised in by Mr Earnshaw because he was adopted.
